Quel est ton parcours en tant qu’illustrateur et dessinateur ?
C’est une question un peu délicate. Je suppose que si je suis payé, alors je suis un artiste professionnel, non ? Cela signifie donc que j’ai commencé ma carrière d’artiste comme peintre en bâtiment… où je peignais des maisons. Je montais des maisons, je posais les plaques de plâtre, j’ajoutais de la texture et ensuite je les peignais. Ce n’était pas vraiment ce que à quoi je m’attendais à faire avec un diplôme d’art, mais au moins je travaillais. Par la suite j’ai quitté ce job pour un autre plus créatif, où je sculptais des blocs de polystyrène pour la décoration de différents magasins et restaurants. Cela m’a offert l’opportunité de concevoir et d’animer des cours de graphisme en ligne. J’ai travaillé à différents postes pendant 10 ans après mes études avant d’avoir ma première pause.
Tu as suivi une école particulière ?
Mon père était professeur dans une université de génie civil (Dr.Brinkerhoff), donc j’ai toujours su que j’aurais un diplôme universitaire. Je voulais vraiment faire des films d’animation, mais je n’étais pas certain de savoir comment obtenir la formation adéquate. J’ai commencé dans un Community College (formation universitaire plus technique, souvent fréquenté deux ans avant de rebasculer dans le système universitaire plus classique), puis je suis parti deux ans au Japon en tant que missionnaire. Ensuite, j’ai été transféré à l’université d’Arizona, puis j’ai rencontré cette fille vraiment très mignonne. L’université n’avait pas de réel programme d’animation, j’ai donc peu suivre quelques cours indépendants, et travailler de manière plus personnalisé. Puis j’ai épousé la fille et terminé mon diplôme à l’université d’Arizona State.
What is your professional background as an artist ?
That’s a bit of a tricky question. I guess that if I’m getting paid, then I’m a professional artist, right ? So that means that I started my “art” career as a painter… I painted houses. I would frame the house, hang the sheetrock, add the texture and then paint it. It wasn’t really what I expected to be doing with an Art Degree, but I was working. I moved from that job to a more creative one where I was sculpting Styrofoam figures for various stores and restaurants. That led into an opportunity designing and animating graphics for online training courses. I worked at various jobs for 10 years after my schooling ended before I got my first break.
Did you follow any specific courses / schools / universties or are you an autodidact?
My father was a college professor of civil engineering (Dr. Brinkerhoff), so I’d always been taught that I would get a college degree. I really wanted to make animated films, but I wasn’t sure how to get the proper training. I started out at a Community College, and then took 2 years off to be a church missionary in Japan. I transferred to Arizona State University after I met this really cute girl. The University didn’t really have an animation program, so I was able to do some independent classes and work to create a more customized degree. I married the girl and finished up my Bachelors degree at Arizona State.

Comment es tu rentré dans le monde de l’artfan Star Wars ?
Même si j’ai un diplôme d’art, je n’étais pas sûr de savoir quoi faire avec. Comme je l’ai mentionné plus haut, j’ai eu beaucoup d’emplois différents, mais aucun d’entre eux n’étaient vraiment ce pourquoi j’avais été à l’école. Ainsi 10 ans après mon diplôme, mon amie d’université Jessica Hickman m’a demandé pourquoi je ne dessinais plus. Je n’avais pas vraiment d’excuse, alors elle m’a invité à contacter TOPPS pour travailler sur leur série de SketchCards du Seigneur des Anneaux. Je devais les faire pour décembre 2007, et j’avais terriblement peur de commettre une erreur sur les cartes, ou qu’ils soient déçus par l’un de mes dessins. J’ai bien galéré pour terminera ce set, et ensuite j’ai demandé à être impliqué dans le set de sketchcards d’Indiana Jones en février 2008. Travailler sur ce set m’a permis de devenir un artiste approuvé par Lucasfilm et j’ai été invité à travailler sur quelques cartes The Clone Wars. C’est grâce à cette implication que j’ai fait partie de la liste des artistes invités à créer un artwork en édition limité pour Celebration Japan.
Quel est ton film Star Wars préféré ?

Quel est ton personnage Star Wars préféré dans la Saga.
J’aime bien Han, et parfois je pense que je suis un type un peu dur comme Han Solo, mais je suis probablement plus un gars optimiste comme un garçon de ferme, un peu comme Luke Skywalker.
How have you been involved in drawing Star Wars ?
How did you get into the Star Wars art/fan univers ?
Even though I had an art degree, I wasn’t really sure what to do with it. As I mentioned before, I had a lot of different jobs, but none of them were really what I had gone to school to do. So 10 years after graduating, my college friend Jessica Hickman asked me why I wasn’t drawing any more. I didn’t really have an excuse, so she invited me to contact Topps to work on the Lord of the Rings Sketch Card set. They were due in December of 2007, and I was scared to death of making a mistake on the cards, or having someone be disappointed that they got one of my terrible drawings. I struggled through that set, and then asked to be involved in the Indiana Jones sketch card set in Februarys of 2008. Working on that set made me a Lucasfilm approved artist and I was invited to work on some of the Clone Wars card sets as well. It was through this involvement that I was on the list of artists that were invited to create a Limited Edition print for Celebration Japan.
What is your favorite Star Wars movie ?

What is your favorite Star Wars character ?
I like Han, and I sometimes think that I’m a Han Solo type of tough guy, but I’m probably more of a wide eyed optimist farm boy like Luke.

Celle que j’aime le plus dessiner c’est Leia. Elle a beaucoup de caractère et de personnalité. Elle est mignonne, mais a un caractère bien trempé. Elle est cette jeune fille qui a ce style de coiffure bizarre et un énorme blaster.
Quel est le personnages que tu aimes le moins dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi.
Je pense que R2 est un peu rigide, donc il n’est pas très amusant à dessiner. Je reçois aussi pas mal de demandes où je dois dessiner Boba Fett, mais je ne pense pas qu’il y ait vraiment un personnage que je n’aime pas dessiner.
Quelle(s) technique(s) utilises tu et comment procèdes tu pour arriver à ton illustration finale ? (dessins au crayon, aquarelle, gouache, acrylique, directement sur ordi,…)
Quand je travaille sur les sketch cards je vais commencer avec un crayon bleu effaçable (Col-erase) comme les animateurs, et ébaucher la pose du personnage. Je vais nettoyer le croquis avec un crayon 0.05 puis pour les contours je vais travailler avec un stylo 0.08. Après un léger effacement des traits de crayons, je colore avec des marqueurs Primsacolor. Quand j’ai recommencé à travailler sur des illustrations, mes techniques ont un peu changé. Je suis en train d’expérimenter un processus entièrement numérique, mais c’est une tout autre histoire ! Bien sur tous mes artworks ont été dessiné au crayon et encré à la main, puis coloré par ordinateur.
What is the character you prefer to draw? Please explain us why.
I like Leia the most. She has a lot of character and personality. She’s cute, but tough. She’s this young girl who’s got this silly bun hair style and is carrying around a huge blaster!
What is the character you do not like to draw the most? Please explain us why.
I think that R2 is a bit stiff, so he’s not as fun to draw, and I get quite a few Boba Fett requests, but I don’t think that there’s a character that I don’t like to draw.
Which techniques do you use to reach the final work? (pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic paint, computer, …)
When I’m working on the sketch cards, I’ll start with a blue Col-erase pencil (just like an animator), and rough out the character pose. I’ll clean up the sketch with a .05 micron pen and then to have a thicker outlines I’ll work with a .08 sized pen. After a light erasing of the pencil lines, I color it with Primsacolor markers. As I’ve got back into illustrating, my techniques have changed a bit. I’m currently experimenting with a completely digital process, but that’s a whole other explanation! All of my prints have been drawn with pencil and inks and then colored on the computer.

J’ai beaucoup aimé travailler sur l’artwork de Celebration Japan, et je pense que c’est celui qui a eu un des meilleurs retours. J’étais à un point ou j’avais appris à renoncer à ce rêve de travailler comme animateur et je ne savais pas vraiment comment trouver un emploi en tant qu’artiste. J’ai commencé à faire ces petits sketches sur ces cartes pour revenir dans le milieu de l’art et cinq mois plus tard, je reçois une invitation de Lucasfilm pour créer une illustration pour célébrer le 30ème anniversaire de Star Wars au Japon ?!?!?! Incroyable ! Tout le travail sur ce premier artwork a été magique.
En plus de Star Wars sur quel univers travailles-tu ? Et lequel est ton favori ?
C’est à travers l’univers de Star Wars que j’ai redémarré ma carrière artistique, donc je n’ai pas travaillé sur un grand nombre d’autre univers. Comme je l’ai mentionné précédemment, en plus de Star Wars j’ai travaillé sur des sketchcards du Seigneur des Anneaux, Indiana Jones et Marvel. J’ai aussi fait un artwork pour les 25 ans de Retour vers le futur, et un petit artwork pour Princess Bride, ainsi que quelques projets personnels. En dehors de Star Wars, je pense qu’Indiana Jones et Firefly pourraient utiliser un peu plus de mon temps.
What is the illustration you liked to work on the most or the best looking one according to you? Why?
I most enjoyed working on the print for Celebration Japan, and I think that it’s the one that get’s the best response. I was at a point where I had pretty much given up on the dream of working as an animator and didn’t really know how to find a job as an artist. I started doing these little sketch cards to get back into art and then 5 months later I’m getting an invitation from Lucasfilm to create some artwork to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of A New Hope opening in Japan?!?!? Unbelievable! Everything about that first print was magic.
What are the other universes you usually work on? What is your favorite one?
It was through the Star Wars universe that I re-booted my art career, so I haven’t worked on too many other properties. As I mentioned earlier, in addition to Star Wars, I worked on sketch cards for Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones and Marvel. I’ve also done a print for the Back to the Future 25th anniversary, and a small poster for the Princess Bride, as well as some personal projects. Outside of Star Wars, I think that Indiana Jones and Firefly could use some more of my time.

Do you have any preferred artist amongst other artists?
I’m a big fan of Russell Walks. He’s a talented artist, creative thinker, a good business man, and a solid Husband and Father.
Maybe a specific illustration of him ?
I love his take on the Star Wars movie poster as if the movie had opened in one of the decades prior to 1977.
Un séjour en Europe où sur une convention prochainement ? Si oui où ? Si non serais tu intéressé ?
J’aimerais voyager en Europe ! Je cherche à participer à Générations Star Wars. Mais je n’ai encore pas de plan définitif. Je vais devoir m’assoir avec ma femme et commencer à planifier mon calendrier des conventions 2012 pour voir toutes les dates.
Comme MIB est aussi un site de collectionneurs, es tu collectionneur ?
J’ai eu beaucoup de jouets Star Wars quand j’étais enfant, et je les aimais beaucoup. Il y a tellement de chose à collectionner, que je ne peu même pas tout suivre, d’ailleurs c’est ce que vous faites si bien sur Mintinbox. Quand mon fils avait 4 ans, ma mère lui a acheté le Faucon Millenium Galactic Heroes. Elle était un peu déçu que je ne l’approuve pas car pour moi il n’était pas les “vrais” personnages que j’ai eu. Eh bien maintenant, je suis devenu fou de cette série ! A chaque nouvelle série, je sors et je les achète tous car je sais qu’ils seront super. En plus c’est parfait, car je les achète “pour mon fils” et les ajoute aux autres. J’ai aussi une petite collection d’artwork venant de Celebration Japon et quelques œuvres de Celebration V, ainsi que des statues animated de Gentle Giant.
Une pièce rare ou favorite ?
Ma pièce préférée dans ma collection et ma figurine Kenner de Biker Scout de 1983. J’ai perdu son blaster, le speeder bike aussi, le plastique de sa poitrine a viré au jaune mais elle est géniale.
Do you plan to travel to Europe for a convention or any artists show? If yes, where? If no, would you be interrested in doing such events?
I’d love to travel to Europe! I am looking into attending the Generations Star Wars show on April 29-30, 2012, but I don’t have any firm plans yet. I’ll have to sit down with my wife and start to plan out my 2012 convention schedule to see all the dates.
As Mintinbox.net is a website dedicated to Star Wars collectors/collectibles, are you a Star Wars collector?
I had all of the Star Wars toys when I was a child, and I loved them. There are so many fantastic things to collect, I can’t even begin to keep up with them all, that’s what you guys do so well at Mintinbox. When my son was 4 years old my mom bought him the Galactic Heroes Millennium Falcon Playset. She was a little worried that I wouldn’t approve of it because it wasn’t the “real” characters like I had. Well, I went CRAZY for that series! It was a new line, and I went out and bought every one because I knew they were going to be great! It worked perfect because I could buy them “for my son”, and keep up with the whole line. I also have a small collection of the art from Celebration Japan and a few pieces from Celebration V, and some of the Animated Maquettes.
Do you have a preferred piece?
My favorite piece in my collection is my original Biker Scout action figure. I’ve lost his gun, the speeder bike is gone, the plastic on his chest has turned yellow, but it’s great.

“Sorry about the mess” est le premier artwork exclusif que j’ai créé et le premier pour Lucasfilm. Il a été fait pour le 30eme anniversaire de “A New Hope” au Japon, et bien sur Han tire le premier. Pour souligner ce point, je n’ai même pas dessiné l’arme de Greedo.
On this art we do like at Mintinbox named “sorry about the mess”, according to you, who shoot first ? It’s your first exclusive licensed Lucasfilm artwork ?
“Sorry about the mess” is the very first exclusive print that I’ve created and the first print for Lucasfilm. It was made for the 30th Anniversary of A New Hope opening in Japan, so of course Han shot first. To emphasize this point in my print, I didn’t even draw Greedo’s gun.
Sur le banner que tu nous as aimablement réalisé, comment as tu cherché d’autres pistes ou d’autre scènes pour l’intégration du logo ?
Lorsque nous avons commencé a parler de la bannière du site, j’ai pensé que la seule direction que je pouvais prendre était que Mintinbox aime Boba Fett. J’ai aussi pensé au fait que l’objectif du site est les produits de collection Star Wars. Comme Boba est un grand chasseur de prime, cela avait aussi un sens pour moi de dire que Boba était un grand collectionneur. Dans le film, sa grande scène était la capture de Han Solo dans la carbonite. J’ai pensé qu’il serait amusant de recréer la scène ou Luke arrive et voit Han emmené dans la carbonite, tout en remplaçant Luke par Boba. Et quoi de mieux pour Boba qu’une mystérieuse boite marqué du logo mintinbox. D’ailleurs lorsque l’artwork a été réalisé je suis allé de l’avant et l’ai soumis à une licence pour une utilisation dans la série Star Wars artiste sur Zazzle.com, mais j’ai oublié de changer le logo de la boite. Après qu’il ait été approuvé par Lucasfilm j’ai fait quelques changements pour que le logo ne pose pas de problème.
On the banner you did for us, did you look into other researches or scenes to include our logo?
When we first started to talk about the web site banner, I think that the only direction that I got was that Mintinbox likes Boba Fett. So I got to thinking about how the focus of the site is all about Star Wars Collecting, and that Boba is this great Bounty Hunter, so it just made sense to me that Boba Fett would be the greatest Star Wars collector of all. In the films, his big scene was on Bespin with the capture of Han Solo. I thought it would be fun to re-create the scene where Luke comes in and sees Han being taken away in Carbonite, and replace Luke with Boba. And what better for Boba to be after than a mysterious box marked only by the Mintinbox logo. When the piece was done I went ahead and submitted it to licensing for use in the Star Wars Artist series on Zazzle, but I forgot to change the logo on the box. AFTER it was approved by Lucasfilm, I made some slight changes to the logo in the artwork so that it would not make any problems.
