Quel est ton parcours en tant qu’illustrateur et dessinateur ?
Je travaille principalement en tant qu’illustrateur indépendant. Je prends le travail quand il est disponible, je collabore aussi avec d’autres artistes sur leur livres, etc.
J’ai commencé dans le domaine professionnel comme encreur. J’ai participé à divers projets de petite presse, des images ou des travaux pour IDW Publishing. Je n’ai pas commencé par dessiner mes propres trucs, je faisais de l’encrage sur ceux des autres, jusqu’à ce que je commence à dessiner pour l’entreprise de Sketch Cards Topps, grâce à Rich Molinelli.
Tu as suivi une école particulière ?
Je dessine depuis des années, j’ai pris des cours d’art tout au long de mon parcours scolaire de l’école primaire jusqu’à ce que j’obtienne mon diplôme d’étude secondaire. Après avoir été diplômé, j’ai été à l’Université d’Art et de Design de Columbus dans l’Ohio, où j’ai obtenu mon diplôme (Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree).
Mais ce n’est qu’environ 10 ans après mon diplôme d’université que je me suis mis sérieusement à l’art et que je suis devenu un illustrateur freelance professionnel.
What is your professional background as an artist ?
I mainly work as a freelance illustrator. Taking jobs when available, collaborations with fellow artists and their books, etc.
I started out in the professional realm as an inker. Doing various projects from small press up to Image and IDW Publishing. I didn’t start drawing my own stuff instead of inking other peoples, until I started into the sketch card industry with Topps thanks to Rich Molinelli.
Did you follow any specific courses / schools / universties or are you an autodidact ?
I have been drawing for years, and took art classes all through grade school till I graduated high school. After graduating, I then attended Columbus College of Art and Design where I graduated with a B.F.A.
But it wasn’t till about 10 yrs after I graduated from college that I took my art more seriously and became a professional freelance illustrator.
Comment es tu rentré dans le monde de l’artfan Star Wars ?
J’ai toujours été fan de Star Wars. Je dessine du Star Wars depuis “A New Hope”, à l’école c’était sur des feuilles de papier quadrillés de l’école. Mes cours et mes devoirs ont été remplis de la scène de la tranchée de l’étoile noire, dessinée dans la marge. J’ai gribouillé des personnages durant ma période jeu de rôle au lycée, mais ce n’est que quand j’ai commencé à dessiner des sketch cards que j’ai ravivé ma dépendance… euh, je veux dire ma passion pour Star Wars.
Ma première série pour Lucasfilm a été pour “Indiana Jones et le Crâne de Cristal”, et je suis alors devenu un artiste approuvé par Lucasfilm. Mais mon premier set Star Wars a été “The Clone Wars Movie” et j’ai travaillé sur toutes les séries de cartes Star Wars depuis. Ensuite Lucasfilm m’a demandé de faire quelques petites choses ici et là en dehors des sketch cards. J’ai fait quelques “How to draw Star Wars” et la semaine Halloween/Zombie pour la promo du livre “Death Trooper” sur StarWars.com
J’etais un artiste invité lors de Celebration V, mon artwork exclusif représentait Cade Bane. En 2010, j’ai aussi participé à la collection “The Empire Strikes Back 30th Anniversary”.
How did you get into the Star Wars art/fan univers ?
I have ALWAYS been a fan of Star Wars. Been drawing it since ‘A New Hope’ on sheets of lined school paper. Sheets of note and homework are probably filled with the ‘trench scene’ all along the margins. 😛 I dabbled with character designs in college during my Role Playing game phase, but it wasn’t till I got into the sketch card arena that I rekindled my addiction…um, I mean affection for Star Wars.
My first set for LFL was ‘Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull’, and I became a LFL approved artist. But my fist Star Wars set wasn’t till ‘The Clone Wars Movie’, and have been doing ever SW sketch card set since. Since then LFL has asked me to do a few things here and there outside the sketch card realm. I have done some ‘How to draw Star Wars’ and the Holloween/Zombie week to promote ‘Death Troopers’ for StarWars.com.
I was a featured guest artist at Celebrations V contributing the ‘Cad Bane’ piece. In 2010 I participated in the Empire Strikes Back 30th Anniversary Art Collection.
Quel est ton film Star Wars préféré ?
Bonne question. Tous ont quelque chose que j’aime, mais celui que j’aime plus que tous, je dirais l’Empire Contre-Attaque.
Quel est ton personnage Star Wars préféré dans la Saga ?
Mince… Je ne sais pas. Je suppose que je devrais dire Boba Fett. Je suis un fétichiste de Boba Fett. Je collectionne tous les trucs sur Boba que je peux me permettre d’acheter. J’aime beaucoup ce qui tourne autour de l’UE. Mais je ne pense pas qu’ils obtiendront le même amour que les personnages des films.
What is your favorite Star Wars movie ?
Good question. All of them have some sort of element that I love, but over all I would say ‘Empire Strikes Back’.
What is your favorite Star Wars character ?
Dang…I don’t know. 🙂 I guess I would have to say Boba Fett. I do have a Boba FETTish. I collect a lot of Boba stuff that I can afford. I do like a lot of the EU stuff though. I don’t think they get the love that the main movie characters get.
Quel est le personnages que tu aimes le plus dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi.
Tout ce qui porte une armure. Clones, Stormtroopers, Mandolarians, etc. Ma réponse serait probablement encore Boba Fett. Je suis ami avec beaucoup de membres du “Mandolarians Mercs” et certains d’entre eux m’ont déja commissionné pour dessiner leur personnage Mandolarien, donc je suis très familiarisé à ce type d’armure et de casque.
Quel est le personnages que tu aimes le moins dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi.
La Princesse Leia. Je n’aime pas dessiner les femmes en général. Elles sont trop souples et sinueuses. Je n’arrive pas à le faire correctement. Je pense que j’ai dessiné trop d’armures. J’arrive à mieux dessiner les femmes de The Clone Wars depuis qu’elles sont mieux stylisées.
J’adore aussi le personnage de Chewbacca; mais je n’aime pas le dessiner. Il y a trop de poils.
Quelle(s) technique(s) utilises tu et comment procèdes tu pour arriver à ton illustration finale ? (dessins au crayon, aquarelle, gouache, acrylique, directement sur ordi,…)
Je commence avec des crayons, puis j’encre une fois que le dessin est approuvé. Pour les couleurs, ça dépend. Si je le fais à la main c’est une combinaison de différents moyens : marqueurs, gouache, acrylique, crayons de couleur, en fonction de l’effet que je cherche à obtenir. MAIS il m’est arrive de demander à un coloriste de le faire pour le faire sous Photoshop correctement mais la plupart du temps j’aime garder le contrôle complet sur le processus donc je ne m’inquiète pas si ce coloriste est familier ou non avec le personnage ou le détail qui m’importe.
What is the character you prefer to draw ? Please explain us why.
Anything with armor. Clones, Stormies, Mandos, etc. My answer again would probably be Boba Fett. I am friends with a lot of the Mandalorian Mercs and some of them have commissioned me to draw their Mandalorian character, so I have gotten real familiar with that style of armor and helmet.
What is the character you do not like to draw the most ? Please explain us why.
Princess Leia. I don’t like drawing women. They are too soft and curvy. 🙂 I can never seem to get it right. Been drawing armor too much I guess. 🙂 I can how ever draw the Clone Wars women better since they are more stylized.
Oh, I love Chewbacca, but I don’t like drawing him. Its all that hair.
Which techniques do you use to reach the final work ? (pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic paint, computer, …)
I start of with pencils, then onto inks once its approved. For colors, it depends. If I do it is mix media hand done stuff. Markers, gouache, acrylics, colored pencils, what ever I need to get the effect I am looking for. BUT I have commissioned it off to a colorist that I trust to color it in Photoshop now and again, but mainly I like to keep control of it and not have to worry if that person is familiar with that character or not to know the details I am looking for.
Quelle est l’illustration que tu as préféré réaliser ou que tu trouves la mieux aboutie ? Pourquoi ?
J’aime vraiment le “Boba Fett Holiday” que j’ai fait pour le plaisir. Emily Jayne Weber m’a contacté un jour sur DevianArt (https://zimeta08.deviantart.com) et m’a demandé de pouvoir mettre en couleur mes artworks. J’ai dit “Oui” et je suis content du résultat car elle a un fait un travail remarquable. J’aime aussi l’artwork avec les Republic Commandos. Je l’ai bien réalisé. Il a été mis en couleur par mon ami Josh Ravello. C’est une pièce qui a eu beaucoup de succès. Maintenant, je l’affiche au fond de mon stand sur les conventions.
What is the illustration you liked to work on the most or the best looking one according to you ? Why ?
I really like the Holiday Boba Fett piece I did for fun. Emily Jayne Weber (https://zimeta08.deviantart.com) contacted me on Deviantart one day and asked to color my lines. I said “yes” and am glad I did She did an outstanding job. I also like the Republic Commando piece I did as well. It was colored by my friend Josh Ravello (https://atombasher.deviantart.com). It has been a very popular piece. I made it into my pull up back drop for conventions.
En plus de Star Wars sur quel univers travailles-tu ? Et lequel est ton favori ?
J’ai travaillé avec IDW Publishing à l’occasion, sur Transformers et Godzilla.
What are the other universes you usually work on? What is your favorite one ?
I have worked with IDW Publishing on occasion with Transformers and Godzilla.
De quel autre illustrateur aimes-tu particulièrement le travail ?
Je n’aime pas souvent cette question. J’ai toujours peur d’offenser quelqu’un si je ne l’ai pas mis sur ma liste… 😛 Comme artiste Star Wars, je regarde toujours ce que fait Dave Dorman. J’aime son travail. Kilian Plunkett a été d’une énorme influence sur mon style comics. Mais tous mes amis artistes ont une grande influence sur moi. Ils me poussent toujours à faire mieux.
Do you have any preferred artist amongst other artists ?
I sometimes don’t like this question. I always am afraid to offend anyone if I left them out of a list. 😛 As a Star Wars artist, I always have looked up to Dave Dorman though. I love his work. Kilian Plunkett has been a BIG influence in my ‘comic’ style. But all my artist friends are big influences and pushers. They always make me want to do better.
Un séjour en Europe où sur une convention prochainement ? Si oui où ? Si non serais tu intéressé ?
J’aimerais bien si l’argent me le permettait. Ma Femme me dit que ne pourrais pas y aller à moins que je l’emmène.

Je suis toujours intéressé pour faire une convention, surtout en Europe. Je ne connais pas vraiment les conventions européennes, donc je ne pourrais pas vous en citer une précisément.
Comme MIB est aussi un site de collectionneurs, es tu collectionneur ?
Je SUIS un collectionneur. J’étais un collectionneur avant même de devenir artiste. Je pense d’ailleurs que ma collection A FAIT de moi un artiste. J’utilise mes figurines comme si elles étaient mes modèles. J’ai encore toutes mes figurines Kenner originales, dont un C-3PO et un Dark Vador dans leur boite. J’ai toujours mon AT-AT ESB et sa boite. De nos jours, je suis plus pointilleux et j’est pris conscience de l’argent donc j’achète juste ce que je veux VRAIMENT avoir. Je ne prends pas tout.
Do you plan to travel to Europe for a convention or any artists show? If yes, where? If no, would you be interrested in doing such events ?
I would LOVE to, if money would allow. My wife said I couldn’t go unless I took her

I am ALWAYS interested in doing a show, especially in Europe. I really don’t know the European convention scene, so I couldn’t tell you a specific one.
As Mintinbox.net is a website dedicated to Star Wars collectors/collectibles, are you a Star Wars collector ?
I AM a collector. I was a collector before I became an artist. I think my collecting MADE me become an artist. I use to draw the figures like they were my models. I still have all my original Kenner figures and their C3PO and Darth carrying case. I still have my ESB AT-AT and box. Now a days, I am nit picky and money conscious, so I just buy what I REALLY want and have to have. I don’t get everything.

Mais oui c’est un de mes artworks. Je participais à la semaine Halloween/Zombie pour promouvoir le roman “Death Trooper” sur StarWars.com. Je suis aussi fan de zombies, des films d’horreurs Japonais, et des histoires de fantômes.
In your art, there are some “Death Trooper” drawings, are you also fan of Horror movie and zombies ?
Why yes that is my piece. I was part of the Halloween/Zombie week to promote the ‘Death Troopers’ novel. I am a fan of zombie, J-Horror and ghost movies.
Travailles-tu avec d’autres fabricants ou éditeurs du monde de Star Wars ?
Je n’ai pas encore eu le privilège de travailler avec Hasbro ou d’autres fabricants. PAS ENCORE… Cependant, Je travaille actuellement avec certains vendeurs de produits Lucasfilm. J’ai par contre déjà travaillé avec ACME pour les 30 ans de l’Empire Contre-Attaque.
Do you works with manufacturer or vendors of the universe of Star Wars ?
I have not had the privilege to work with Hasbro or any of the manufactures yet. YET!:P I am in the process of working with some of the other LFL venders though. I have done a piece with Acme Archive in the past for the Empire Strikes Back 30th Anniversary Art Collection.
