Quel est ton parcours en tant qu’illustrateur et dessinateur ?
J’ai commencé professionnellement à l’âge de 19 ans, j’ai travaillé comme illustrateur dans un studio de publicité. Ce fut une formation énorme en soi.
As-tu suivi une école particulière ?
J’ai eu plus de cours d’art que la normale au lycée. La seule chose que j’ai apprise durant mon unique année à l’université fut d’avoir une meilleure composition… Ce qui est bien. J’ai été formé par un artiste de publicités sur les techniques aux crayons et au lavis noir et blanc. Pour mes peintures en couleurs, je suis autodidacte et je pratique toujours la méthode empirique.
What is your professional background as an artist?
I started professionally at the age of 19, working as an illustrator in a commercial art studio. That was a huge education in itself.
Did you follow any specific courses / schools / universties or are you an autodidact?
I had more than the normal amount of art classes in High School. The only thing I learned in my 1 year of college was better composition… which is good. After that, I was trained by a commercial artist on pencil technique and black & white washes. As a color painter, I was self-taught through an (always ongoing) trial and error period.

Je dessine Star Wars depuis l’âge de 7 ans. Mon premier travail professionnel Star Wars a été mon travail sur les Trading Cards de Topps.

How did you get involved into the Star Wars’ art/fan universe?
I’ve been drawing Star Wars since I was 7 years old. Working for topps inc. on their trading card sets was my 1st pro-Star Wars gig.
Quel est ton film Star Wars préféré ?
Est-ce que les films des Ewoks comptent ? Si non, je vais aller vers l’Empire Contre Attaque ou le Star Wars Holiday Special. J’ai rencontré Craig Chaquico (guitariste de Jefferson Starship) il y a plusieurs années et je me suis souvenu de son apparition dans le Holiday Special. Il m’a dit “je ne peux pas croire que tu te souviennes que nous avons fait ça !” Il s’est ensuite recroquevillé en boule et s’est mis à flotter en l’air. Le Retour du Jedi était mon film de marionnette préféré.
Quel est ton personnage Star Wars préféré dans la saga ?
Je ne sais pas si je peux répondre honnêtement à cette question. Si je devais en choisir un, ce serait Vador. Je me souviens de lui dans les épisodes IV et V j’avais entre 7 et 10 ans.
What is your favorite Star Wars movie?
Do the Ewok movies count? If not, I’ll have to go with ESB or the Star Wars Holiday Special. I met Craig Chaquico (guitarist for Jefferson Starship) several years ago and told him that I definitely remembered his music video appearance on the Holiday Special. He said “I can’t believe you remember that we did that!” He then shriveled up into a ball and floated away. Return of the Jedi was my favorite Muppet movie.
What is your favorite Star Wars character ?
I don’t know that I can honestly answer that. If I had to pick one, it would be Vader, as I remember him from Episodes 4 and 5 and in between the ages of 7-10.

J’aime vraiment dessiner Cad Bane… ou tout autre personnage qui présente un défi personnel à relever pour faire ressortir encore plus sa personnalité.
Quel est le personnage que tu aimes le moins dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi ?
Ummm … Je ne peux vraiment pas répondre à cela. Je prends du plaisir dans tous ce que je dessine.
What is the character you prefer to draw? Please explain us why.
I really like drawing Cad Bane… or any other character that presents a personal challenge to bring out even more personality.
What is the character you do not like to draw the most? Please explain us why.
Uhmmm… I can’t answer that, really. I tap into the enjoyment of whatever I’m drawing.
Quelle(s) technique(s) utilises-tu et comment procèdes-tu pour arriver à ton illustration finale ? (dessins au crayon, aquarelle, gouache, acrylique, directement sur ordi, etc.)
Je sacrifie de petits animaux sur mon autel à Jack Kirby. Je n’utilise pas l’ordinateur… Je suis en train de me battre contre, en essayant de rester traditionnelle mais il y a encore à faire.
Which techniques do you use to reach the final work? (pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic painting, computer, etc.)
I sacrifice small animals on my shrine to Jack Kirby. I don’t use the computer… I’m fighting it, trying to stay traditional. It’s still up for grabs.
Quelle est l’illustration que tu as préférée réaliser ou que tu trouves la plus aboutie ? Pourquoi ?
J’ai vraiment aimé travailler sur une pièce que j’appelle “Bus Stop”, un hommage aux films de Hayao Miyazaki. À la même époque, j’ai fait un artwork appelé “Indiana Jones Celebration”. Les deux étaient des projets personnels mais je n’ai pas le temps d’en faire plus (j’en ai une liste complète à faire avant de mourir).
What is the illustration that you like to have worked on the most or the best looking one according to you ? Why ?
I really enjoyed working on a piece I call “Bus Stop” a tribute to the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Around the same time I did an “Indiana Jones Celebration” piece. Both where personal projects that I just don’t get to do anymore (I’ve a bucket list of them).
En plus de Star Wars sur quel univers travailles-tu ? Et lequel est ton favori ?
À l’heure actuelle, je travaille sur un projet de Star Trek. J’ai fait quelques trucs sur des super-héros. Mais pas depuis un certain temps et je suis impatient de revenir vers eux si cela peut se faire.
What are the other universes you usually work on? What is your favorite one, if any?
Right now I’m working on a Star Trek project. I’ve done some superhero stuff, but not for a while and I’m itching to get back to that if things line up properly.
De quel autre illustrateur aimes-tu particulièrement le travail ? Une illustration précise de lui peut-être ?
Oui … mais je n’en ai pas de favoris.
Un séjour en Europe pour une convention prochainement ? Si oui , où ? Si non, serais-tu intéressé ?
Pas actuellement. J’aimerais ! J’y ai pensé pendant les cinq dernières années. Tout dépend de mon planning de travail et du budget. À l’heure actuelle il y a encore des shows du côté des USA. HeroesCon arrive en Juin et Star Wars Celebration en Août.
Comme MIB est aussi un site de collectionneurs, es-tu collectionneur ?
Je suis un collectionneur. Encore plus quand j’étais enfant. J’ai collectionné les cartes originales Star Wars de Topps. Je les trimballais partout dans un sac en papier. J’ai eu aussi les jouets bien sûr. Actuellement je n’ai plus que quelques pièce que je personnalise pour ma propre satisfaction.
Do you have any preferred artist amongst others? Maybe a specific illustration of him?
Yes… but I don’t like any of them.
Do you plan to travel to Europe for a convention or any artists show? If yes, where? If no, would you be interrested in joining such events?
Not presently. I would love to! I’ve thought about that for the past five years. It all depends on my work schedule and the budget. Right now it’s still stateside shows. HeroesCon coming up in June and Star Wars Celebration in August.
As Mintinbox.net is a website dedicated to Star Wars collectors/collectibles, are you a Star Wars collector ?
I am a collector. More so when I was a kid. I collected the original Star Wars cards from topps. I carried them around in a paper bag. I had the toys, of course. Now I have a few pieces, most of which I customize to my satisfaction.
Sur cet artwork que nous apprécions à Mintinbox, tu as choisi de représenter Cad Bane sur un Kybuck, est-ce un clin d’œil à la première série Clone wars de Tartakovsky on l’on voyait Yoda sur son Kybuck ?
Pas vraiment. C’était plus un clin d’œil au personnage original de Cad Bane qui vient des westerns spaghetti. C’est également quelque chose que j’ai imaginé dans une histoire de Cad Bane que j’ai écrite et que je veux illustrer. Mais qui sait si je pourrais le faire…
On this art we do like at Mintinbox, you choose to represent Cad Bane on a Kybuck, is it a nod to the first Clone Wars Series of Tartakovsky where we saw Yoda on a Kybuck ?
Not really. It was more of nod to the original inspiration Cad Bane came from (the Spaghetti Western). It also is something I imagined from a Cad Bane story I’ve written and want to illustrate. But who knows if I’ll get to that?

Non, pas vraiment.
Do you work with other manufacturers or publishers from the Star Wars universe?
Not really, no.
