Banner Artofstarwars Art

Tu as suivi une école particulière ?

What is your professional background as an artist ? I have been doing artwork for a living for most of my adult life. Starting off working on small local projects, and branching out into the world of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Comic book conventions in my early to mid twenties. I spent years traveling the country networking at these events and establishing myself as a reliable hard working artist. Don’t get me wrong there was and still is plenty of fun to be had at these events, but at the core of them for me it was always about making connections. Jobs started happening on a pretty regular basis around a decade ago for me. A lot of work for most of the main comic book publishers, a good amount of private collectors were showing interest in my work and both purchasing as well as commissioning original artwork for their collections. One of the private collectors that I had became friends with at these shows over the years was none other than the ultimate Star Wars Collector, Steve Sansweet. When I had met Steve I was working on projects ranging from The World Poker Tour Pinball matching artwork to story boards for the automotive industry to dozens of Comic book covers for Chaos comics.

Did you follow any specific courses / schools / universties or are you an autodidact ? I did take a Vocational Commercial Art course while in highschool. After those years I bounced around a local business college and took some fundamental courses in Illustration and Graphic Design. At this point in my life I started working in a local art studio with a group of illustrators that were keeping busy on underground projects. I picked up tricks and techniques from some of these guys as well as many of the artists I have become friends with over the years. So I am primarily self taught. Ive been working in my own studio alone for over 12 years, so nearly all the work you have seen the last decade or so has been an evolution of trial by error, happy accidents, and alot of technique experimentation and just not giving up.

How have you been involved in illustrating Star Wars? How did you get involved into the Star Wars’ art/fan universe? I have been very fortunate in the Star Wars Universe. I started doing fan art pieces and bringing them to the conventions I had mentioned earlier. I was desperately trying to get the attention of someone at Lucasfilm, or one of the companies producing official Star Wars merchandise. By a little bit of luck and alot of hard work I did catch the attention of Steve Sansweet as well as Troy Alders. I would see Steve a few times a year at various events and Troy every other year and always remind them that I would love the opportunity to do some official work for Lucasfilm. Well after awhile Mr. Sansweet gave me just that opportunity. I was hired by Topps to do 500 sketch cards for the Revenge of the Sith card set. That was the jumpstart I needed to get the ball rolling working on Lucasfilm projects. The Cards led to my exclusive artwork for Celebration III, which led to my first meeting with Hasbro that would later mature into on ongoing relationship between Hasbro and myself working on dozens of Star Wars toy packaging. I’m currently working for most of Lucasfilms major licensors as well as staying very busy producing new artwork for Acme Archives Direct. They produce most of the Star Wars fine art reproductions you have seen the past couple of years. The Catalog that Acme has of Star Wars artwork by both myself as well as a very talented pool of Star Wars artist in nothing short of beautiful and amazing. Many different styles of artwork by many different artists from all walks of life around the world. Another exciting project that I am currently working on every other month are my illustrations for the awesome short stories in Star Wars Insider. The list goes on and on regarding my involvment in the Star Wars universe and if I’m lucky it will stay this way for many years to come!

Brian Rood art of star wars

Vador.

What is your favorite Star Wars movie ? It is a very tough call. I love Empire but there is just something so magical about A New Hope that I really find it hard to decide between the two. Somedays I say hands down Empire, and others I feel like I have to respect the start of it all and go with ANH. But for right now, since my painting of Yoda was recentley used in the Blu Ray for The Empire Strikes Back key art, I would have to to go with Empire. How’s that for not answering your question.

What is your favorite Star Wars character ? Vader.

Jar Jar Binks, duh…

What is the character you prefer to draw? Please explain us why.
Just like I said that Vader is my favorite character, he is also one of my favorite characters to draw. You would think that he would be simple. He is primarily black, and technical. The fun is bringing all those colors into the reflections of the black, and adding mood, emotion, and tone with the pose of the body and tilt of his head. His expression never changes, but if you do it the right way you can set so many different moods with a Vader painting by pose and lighting. So as far as Vader being simple to draw, he’s actually quite the opposite, once you consider all these other factors.

What is the character you do not like to draw the most? Please explain us why.
Jar Jar Binks, duh…

Which techniques do you use to reach the final work? (pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic painting, computer, etc.)
All of the above and then some. The work I have done the past few years ranges from Acrylics, to watercolors, to digital, to inkwash. I often merge many or all of these mediums to get to the final product.
Some pieces are 100 percent traditional, some are 100 percent digital. Others are a merge of both digital and traditional.

What is the illustration that you like to have worked on the most or the best looking one according to you? Why?
I honestly cant answer that. I really have a handful of pieces that mean very much to me. Some because of special things I was going through in that part of my life and others for pure artistic reasons, and still others from a commercial accomplishment standpoint.
I also don’t necessarily think that I have created my best looking illustration yet.
I have a ton of very exciting projects lined up 2012. Maybe this piece will be created this year, we will just have to wait and see! 🙂

What are the other universes you usually work on? What is your favorite one, if any ?
I do a lot of work with Disney, Star Trek, some Marvel and there are about 3 new projects on the horizon that are really going to be something special.
They range from iconic 100 year old properties to some of the biggest films from the 80s. Check my site www.brianrood.com for updates.

Do you have any preferred artist amongst others? Or maybe a specific illustration ?
I have an amazing group of friends and collegues that I have met over the years at the shows I have attended. Many artists that seemed to be so far out of reach from me have actually became close friends over the years. I really have a ton of respect and admiration for the work that Ralph McQuarrie did to define the Star Wars universe.
I also never get tired of breezing through the hundreds of paintings that Struzan has done for the motion picture industry. Of course Frazetta and so many more have all inspired me to become the artist that I am today.
If these gentlemen have not paved the way I do not know if I would be doing this for a career. Its because of these types of artists that a I felt that there was a chance and a possibility to do this genre of artwork for a living. At the core of it I am a huge fan of artwork. My list could really take me the next hour to complete, but basically if it has feeling, mood, and some kind of emotion to it then the odds are that I love it. Oh yea, it has be drawn and painted well also. 🙂

Do you plan to travel in Europe for a convention or any artists show?
I sure hope so! I was there a few years ago for Celebration Europe and have been feeling the need to get back sooner than later!

If yes, where? If no, would you be interrested in joining such events?
Definitley interested let me know when and where. 🙂

As Mintinbox.net is a website dedicated to Star Wars collectors/collectibles, are you a Star Wars collector? Do you have a preferred piece?
I am a bit of a collector. I have a ton of original Brian Rood artworks! Just kidding. I have a huge amount of artworks that I have collected from my friends in the industry that is very very cool stuff. I also love some of the statues and busts that I have throughout the studio. As far as my preferred piece, not yet. I am hoping to attain armor for both Fett and a Trooper this year so when that happens those will be.

Recently you were in Disneyland Park for an event called “Art of Disney” do you think, an event like this could be organized in Disneyland Paris? Would you come ?
The Festival of the Masters was a great time and quite successful for our little group of Acme Archives Direct artist, so I would love for the event to be organized in Paris and YES I would be there in a heartbeat!

Mintinbox was at the Rancho Obi-Wan reopening, you draw a new patch for it. Can you tell us the story of the conception of the patch ?
That artwork in the picture there is the original black and white preliminary drawing that I did. The full color painting was commissioned by Topps for the Galaxy VI set.
I did over a dozen cards for that set. Obi-Wan was one of my personal favorites. All these cards were created using a new watercolor / acrylic style that I have been working with in the last few years. This was the first large scale project that was completely executed in this new style.
George Lucas had purchased a number of these original paintings and they started showing up later that year in the strangest and best places I could have imagined. Steve Sansweet managed to keep this little suprise completely secret and unveiled it at the event.
I was totally blown away and honored to be part of the official reopening of Rancho Obi-Wan. Another of these watercolor painting showed up around the same time as on of the Key Art pieces for the Star Wars Blu-Ray set.

Do you work with other manufacturers or publishers from the Star Wars universe ?
I work with most of the major publishers and licensors of Star Wars merchandises. I have met alot of great folks on this journey and almost everyone has been tied to Star Wars one way or another.
Some of the past companies I have worked with include, Topps, Hasbro, Lucasfilm Ltd., Acme Archives Direct, Titan Publishing / Star Wars Insider, and many more.

Merci Brian !

Where can we get your work ?
Most of my work can be found throught various retail markets, galleries, Department and Toy Stores etc.
Many of my fine art prints are found at the numerous galleries throughout the Disney Amusement parks, FAO Schwrartz carries a line of my artwork that I do in conjunction with Acme Archives Direct and you can also purchase my artist proof, fine art reproductions and orginal artwork direct from my studio.
