Reportage – Dévoilement du premier ComicCon d’Ottawa 2012

Un nouvel événement va naître ce printemps, Ottawa aura son Comiccon, le tout premier salon comic books et science-fiction de la capitale du Canada qui verra le jour les 12 et 13 mai 2012 au CE Centre.

Ce sont les fondateurs et quelques membres de l’organisation du Comiccon de Montréal qui mettront vie à ce nouveau salon. L’équipe se compose donc d’Alex La Prova (Président), Oscar Yazedjian (Vice-président, ventes et relations avec les artistes), Elizabeth Jutras (Vice-présidente, communications), Scott Péron (Vice-président, exploitation), Dan Péron (Vice-président, approvisionnement), ainsi que David Newman (Vice-président, développement créatif) et Nathalie Sarno (Vice-présidente, publicité et médias).

Avez-vous déjà rêvé d’être un superhéros ?
Tel était le thème annonciateur de ce grand rendez-vous auquel j’ai donc été convié le 13 mars pour le dévoilement de la programmation de ce tout premier Comiccon, qui avait lieu en région d’Ottawa, précisément à la Brasserie Mill Street, lieu très convivial pour l’occasion.

A new event will appear this Spring: Ottawa will get its own ComicCon, the very first convention about SciFi and comics for the capital of Canada, which will open at the CE Centre on the 12th and 13th of May 2012.

The founders and some members of the organizing committee of the Montreal Comiccon will give birth to this new event. Here are the members of this magic team: Alex La Prova (President), Oscar Yazedjian (Vice-president, sales and talent relations), Elizabeth Jutras (Vice-presidente, communications), Scott Péron (Vice-president, operations), Dan Péron (Vice-president, procurement), and also David Newman (Vice-president, creative development) and Nathalie Sarno (Vice-president, advertising and media).

Have you ever dreamt of being a superhero?
It was the main theme of the event I was invited to on the last 13th of March for a presentation of the programme of the convention. The place was in the Ottawa area, and more precisely at the very friendly Mill St. Brewpub.

En arrivant sur les lieux, je découvre cette superbe Brasserie Restaurant, bâtisse de pierres à chaux construite en 1842, qui est pittoresquement située dans le centre historique du Moulin Thompson-Perkins sur les rives de l’Outaouais, autrefois une des plus importantes exploitations forestières au monde. Le Mill St. se spécialise donc dans la fabrication de bières artisanales ayant remporté plusieurs prix dont « Brasserie canadienne de l’année » pendant trois années consécutives aux Canadian Brewing Awards.

Je me dirige donc à l’étage du Mill Street et voilà que des costumés de la Capital City Garrison, la 501st d’Ottawa, défilent devant mes yeux juste avant mon entrée dans la salle… ouf… j’arrive à temps pour le discours ! C’est David Newman qui donna le ton à la conférence, nous présentant ce tout premier Comiccon d’Ottawa, suivi par le grand dévoilement des premiers invités qui seront du salon.

C’est donc l’acteur Patrick Stewart qui ouvre le bal comme invité d’honneur, le légendaire Capitaine Jean-Luc Picard dans Star Trek : The Next Generation et professeur Xavier dans les films X-Men.
Parmi les autres acteurs à être révélés, je suis particulièrement heureux d’y voir les deux suivants, le très sympathique Jeremy Bulloch de notre saga préférée, ainsi que Lou Ferrigno, le monsieur Univers qui a tenu le rôle de l’incroyable Hulk dans la série télévisée diffusée à la fin des années 1970 et début 80, des épisodes qui m’ont fasciné pendant l’enfance.

Arriving at the place, I discovered a very nice pub, installed in an old stone house built in 1842, which is typically set in the historic centre of the Thompson-Perkins Mill on the banks of the Ottawa River; that area was one of the most productive logging years ago. The Mill St. Brewpub specialty is the artisanal beers, and many of them won contests and awards, among them the “Canadian Brewery of the year” for three consecutive years at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

I went upstairs of the Mill Street and I was welcomed by members of the Capital City Garrison, the 501st of Ottawa. In fact, they were parading in front of me, meaning that I arrived right on time for the opening speech! David Newman was the orator, presenting the very first Ottawa ComicCon, followed right after by the anouncement of the first guests.

The first, who will be a guest of honnor, is no other than Patrick Stewart, who was on screen Captain (then Admiral) Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Professor Xavier in the first three “X-Men” movies.
Among the other guests, who have been anounced, I am very happy to see the two next ones: the sympathetic Jeremy Bulloch (do we need to present him?), and Lou Ferrigno, a.k.a The Incredible Hulk from the TV show of our youth, in the late 70s-early 80s.

Et la liste d’invités ne s’arrête pas là ! John de Lancie qui a notamment incarné Q dans Star Trek, la sensuelle Elvira (Cassandra Peterson), Vic Mignogna ainsi que Heroes of the North seront du rendez-vous. Les amateurs de comic books y retrouveront Darick Robertson, Dale Eaglesham, Richard Starkings, Ronn Sutton, Janet Hetherington, Marco Rudy et Neal Adams, grand dessinateur pour DC Comics avec son style d’illustration très réaliste sur notamment les personnages de Superman, Batman et Green Arrow. Neal Adams à également réalisé plusieurs planches pour le grand Stan Lee chez Marvel Comics.

De plus, la présence de la très jolie modèle québécoise Marie-Claude Bourbonnais devrait ravir la jante masculine ! Grande fan de comic books et de séries animée, MC a posé dernièrement pour le magazine FHM Philippines.
Tout comme lors du Comiccon de Montréal, les fans de la trilogie Retour vers le futur auront l’occasion de se faire prendre en photo avec la célèbre DeLorean de la TeamFox, toujours en quête de fonds pour la recherche sur la maladie de Parkinson de la fondation de Michael J. Fox.

Le Comiccon d’Ottawa accueillera également plus de 100 revendeurs et plusieurs artistes prêts à faire quelques sketchs de votre héros favori, sans oublier les associations comme la Capital City Garrison, les nombreux panels, les séances de photos OP et bien plus.
Bien entendu, il y aura d’autres annonces des organisateurs d’ici les 12 et 13 mai 2012.

The list of guests is not over! John de Lancie, who played Q in Star Trek, the Mistress of Darkness Elvira (Cassandra Peterson), Vic Mignogna and Heroes of the North will join the party too! Fans of comics books will also be delighted: Darick Robertson, Dale Eaglesham, Richard Starkings, Ronn Sutton, Janet Hetherington, Marco Rudy and Neal Adams, a great DC Comics artist, with his realistic touch especially for characters such as Superman, Batman and Green Arrow. On the other hand, Neal Adams collaborated with Stan Lee at Marvel Comics.

Moreover, the beautiful Quebecian model Marie-Claude Bourbonnais will please most of the male attendance. She is a comics and anime fan, and was recently the featured model of FHM Philippines.

As for the Montréal Comiccon, the Back to The Future fans will be able to be shot nearby the famous DeLorean of the TeamFox, still raising funds for the research against the Parkinson disease for the profit of the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

The Ottawa ComicCon will also host more than 100 retailers and artists. The latters will be ready to sketch your favourite characters. And of course, an event will not be complete if associations such as the Capital City Garrison are not present. Panels, OP photo shoots and other things will receive you too.

Of course, that’s only the first batch of announces: one can expect more in the coming weeks, until the 12 of May!

Bref, pour un coup d’envoi de cette première édition du Comiccon d’Ottawa, je lève mon chapeau à l’équipe. Après cette belle présentation, s’en est suivie une petite séance photo avec les membres de l’organisation, accompagnés par les Stormtrooper, Boba et Jango Fett, un Tusken, un Garde Royal, Galactic Marine, des Jedi et bien sûr, le Seigneur Vador.

Des rafraîchissements et un petit goûter du Mill Street étaient offerts pour clore ce beau rendez-vous, un délice. J’en ai également profité pour échangé quelques mots avec les organisateurs.

Avant mon départ, je profite de mon passage au Mill Street pour faire un petit tour à la boutique, où quelques souvenirs sont proposés : T-Shirts, verres et bien sur… de la bière !
Je souhaite donc santé à ce nouveau Comiccon !

In fact, for a launch of the Ottawa ComicCon, hat off to the organizing committee! After the presentation, there was a photo shoot session with the team and Stormtroopers, Jango & Boba Fett, Tusken Raiders, Royal Guard,a Galactic Marine, some Jedi and of course, the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader!

Refreshments and drinks were offered by the Mill Street at the closing of the event, very tasty. I took the opportunity to chat a little with the organizing members.

And before leaving, I went to visit the Mill Street itself and its gift shop, where one can find souvenirs: tees, glasses… and of course beer!
So, Cheers to this new ComicCon!
