Montréal… vendredi 26 août… 4h00am… bip bip biiiiippp… non, ce n’est pas R2-D2, mais bien le réveil-matin qui retenti… l’heure du grand départ a sonné vers une nouvelle destination, une nouvelle convention à laquelle je m’apprêtais de découvrir… le FanExpo Canada à Toronto.
Je pars donc en solo en voiture, en passant de l’autoroute du Souvenir à l’autoroute des Héros, jusqu’à 550 quelques kilomètres plus loin, au Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Pour la première fois, l’événement qui en était à sa 17ème année durait quatre jours, du 25 au 28 août, et ayant déjà manqué la première journée, je fais un check-in rapide à l’hôtel InterContinental, qui est à même le centre de convention, c’était l’idéal pour profiter au maximum de mon séjour. Après avoir récupéré mon pass, je me suis donc dirigé vers l’édifice Sud qui était occupé en entier par le Fan Expo, plus de 37 000 m² de superficie.
Mon entrée se déroule très bien, une petite file qui est déjà en mouvement, pas trop d’achalandage comparativement à la journée de samedi, où déjà une heure avant l’ouverture, une immense file s’était formée à l’extérieur et dont je ne voyais pas la fin, et ce seulement pour ceux comme moi qui avaient déjà leur pass, une chance que le soleil était avec nous.
Le Fan Expo avait une superbe liste d’invités qui attendait les fans de tous les genres. Étant donné qu’il y avait 25 célébrités présentes, la tâche se voulait colossale pour moi seul de les couvrir tous, surtout que certains n’étaient seulement présents que certaines journées, dont William Shatner qui n’était là que le dimanche, journée à laquelle je ne pouvais assister. Du côté de notre saga préférée, Anthony Daniels et Gary Kurtz étaient les personnalités présentes, tandis que William Shatner dont je vous parlais et Marina Sirtis, pour ne nommer que ceux-ci, était là pour accueillir les fans de Star Trek. Outre les autres grandes vedette présentes tels que Tom Felton des films Harry Potter ainsi que les très jolies Hayden Panettiere et Eliza Dushku, des acteurs ayant émerveillé ma jeunesse étaient au rendez-vous, L’homme de six millions (L’homme qui valait trois milliards) Lee Majors ainsi que Barbara Eden et Larry Hagman de la populaire série télévisée I Dream of Jeannie.
Pour leurs dédicaces, c’était des files et des files, qui ne dérougissaient pas pour certains acteurs, c’était notamment le cas pour le méchant Drago Malfoy, un des plus populaires du salon, dont ses fans s’extasiaient lors de son arrivée. Et que dire de plus pour Robert Englund, celui qui a incarné Freddy Krueger, une file monstre… de quoi donner des cauchemars ! Certains devaient même refaire la file le lendemain, faute de temps.
Malheureusement, pour certains acteurs, toute photo était strictement interdite et laissez-moi vous dire que c’était très bien surveillé, avec une organisation dans les files sans faille. C’était le cas pour la très jolie Hayden Panettiere, mais heureusement, après avoir eu sa dédicace et ayant gentiment demandé, son agente m’a permis quelques clichés, mais dans la file… pas facile avec le monde présent. Situation un peu similaire pour Anthony, qui était lui à part des autres, un peu reculé à l’abri des photographes, pas de photos à sa table. Par contre, lors de l’attente en file, lors de quelques poses, il prenait le temps pour dire un sympathique bonjour à ses fans et l’occasion de se faire immortaliser à ses côtés était alors permise. Certains acteurs se prêtaient également à des séances de questions/réponses, occasion d’en découvrir un peu plus sur eux, le duo d’I Dream of Jeannie était particulièrement intéressant, on sentait une belle complicité entre eux.
Parmi les associations présentes, bien sûr la 501st Canadian Garrison de Toronto, dont six membres de la Forteresse Impériale s’étaient joints à eux, en plus de quelques-uns d’Ottawa. À leurs côtés était installé R2 Builders Club avec quelques droïdes et derrière, la Steampunk Canada avec leurs gadgets rétro-futuristes ainsi que The Ontario Ghostbusters, qui étaient vraiment intéressants à découvrir. À la table de ces chasseurs de fantômes, on y voyait le célèbre Slim et à y voir les superbes props, ça me donne hâte de voir le prochain Ghostbusters III qui a été officiellement annoncé pour une sortie en 2013.
Du côté des stands du salon, de grands noms, Hasbro, Lucasfilm, DK, Warner Bros., mais tout de même, de petites déceptions si je pense aux deux premiers. Pas beaucoup de proders Star Wars présentés par Hasbro, les packs commémoratifs des Épisodes I et II pour la sortie des Blu-ray, le Republic Attack Shuttle et bien sûr le B-Wing Fighter, l’exclu du salon. Chez Lucasfilm, pas de coffret Blu-ray en démo, bon, il ne fallait pas rêver… seulement un écran vert où l’on pouvait se faire prendre en photo simplement pour être la grande vedette sur l’affiche promotionnelle de la future sortie du coffret ! Par contre, de superbes décors étaient en place pour se faire photographier avec différents personnages de l’univers Star Wars, dont un AT-ST construit par la Légion canadienne. Sur le stand de DK, le choix y était, avec la panoplie de livres de notre saga préférée, aux côtés de ceux d’Indiana Jones et même des films à succès Transformers. Le stand le plus impressionnant était sans équivoque celui de la Warner Bros., qui avait mis le paquet avec un décor affichant un de leurs derniers succès, Green Lantern, avec l’extra-terrestre Abin Sur, grandeur réelle, tout droit débarqué du film, qui était d’ailleurs incarné par Temuera Morrison.
Pour les mordus de jeux vidéos, il y avait le Gaming Expo qui faisait partie intégrante du salon, dont une grande partie était occupée par la majorité des plateformes de jeux, tels que XBox 360 et Nintendo 3DS. LG Electronics était également de la partie, où les gamers pouvaient se donner à cœur joie dans un des plus grands tournois de jeu en 3D au Canada. Leur installation était superbe, aux couleurs du jeu Call of Duty. Un peu partout était aussi mises à disposition des bornes de jeux pour ceux qui désiraient s’amuser un peu, dont celui du stand de Disney Interactive Studios, un peu plus populaire chez les plus petits. Je ne peux passer sous silence la grande absence du jeu Star Wars The Old Republic, seulement annoncé sur une grande bannière, où une démo aurait pu être accessible.
Du côté des artistes, l’allée s’étendait d’un bout à l’autre du salon, ce qui laissait place à de nombreux talents. En me promenant de table en table, j’ai eu la surprise de voir des comics book de la série Star Wars The Old Republic dont notre ami Benjamin Carré a illustré les couvertures, j’ai donc fait la connaissance de Dave Ross qui en a fait le storyboarding. Aussi, parmi les illustrateurs les plus connus de Mintinbox, Katie Cook qui avait entre autres son artwork de la collection ESB 30th Anniversary, ainsi que Leo Leibelman toujours avec ses superbes œuvres Star Wars. J’y ai également retrouvé l’artiste québécois François Chartier, arborant fièrement sa nouvelle bannière, qui m’a présenté ses derniers artworks, dont le sublime Batman « Dancing with the devil by the pale moonlight ». J’en ai profité pour me procurer son tout premier sketchbook, avec en bonus un superbe sketch qu’il m’a réalisé pendant l’event, merci encore François.
J’ai fait un petit tour rapide des nombreux revendeurs en raison de manque de temps, il y en avait vraiment pour tous les goûts, des t-shirts, des BD, des cartes, des figurines, parmi tous ces multiples proders je n’ai pas vu somme toute de grandes nouveautés. Petite anecdote en me promenant parmi les tables pleines de comic books, j’aperçois une affiche du prochain Montréal Comic Con, où j’ y rencontre Alex, un des organisateurs de l’évènement qui est également propriétaire de 1,000,000 Comix, un bref petit bonjour, on se revoit donc à la mi-septembre !!
Les costumés sont venus en très grand nombre au salon, chacun ajoutant leur touche colorée à l’évènement. Plusieurs pirates, princesses Leia, superhéros, certains ayant mis beaucoup d’efforts, d’autres simplement s’étant ajouté une touche de maquillage, quelques-uns avaient même des accoutrements un peu encombrants. Je donne une mention spéciale au Steampunk Buzz Lightyear, tout simplement original avec ses ailes qui se déployaient, vers l’infini et plus loin encore !
Finalement, c’est sans compter les nombreux panels et autres activités auxquels je n’ai pas pu assister, dont la projection de la première de la quatrième saison de Star Wars The Clone Wars (je me suis dit que j’attendrai la première en français au Comic Con de Montréal), bref, un planning de fou où personne ne peut s’ennuyer, il y en avait vraiment pour tous les goûts. Pour une première expérience, j’ai donc adoré cette convention qui a accueilli un impressionnant total de 77 840 visiteurs, j’y retournerai certainement une autre année, juste un peu décevant que le Fan Expo de 2012 se déroulera aux mêmes dates que Star Wars Celebration VI.

Montréal… Friday 26th of August 2011… 4:00am… Beep Beep Beeeeeep… No, that’s not R2-D2 but the alarm clock… Which means it is time for a new destination, a new convention to attend to: Fan Expo Canada in Toronto.
I drove alone, from the Souvenir Highway to the Heroes’ Highway and up to 550kilometres farer, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For the first time in seventeen years, the event lasted four days, from the 25th to the 28th of August. Since I alread missed one day, I decided to do a fast check-in at the InterContinental Hotel, which was also hosting the convention. So it was the best location to enjoy fully my stay. I took my pass, and then I went to the South Building, which was fully occupied by the Fan Expo, i.e. more than 37,000 square metres.
I managed to enter without any problem: a small queue was already moving, not that much people especially compared to the next day, when one hour before the opening a long and endless queue was waiting outside of the building… And this Saturday’s queue was only for the people with a pass! Thank the Force, it was a sunny day.
The Fan Expo had a pretty impressive list of guests, waiting for the fans coming from various horizons. Since they were twenty-five, it was quite a challenge for me to cover them all, especially considering that some of them were not present every day. E.g.: William Shatner attended only on Sunday, day I wasn’t able to be present. On the side of our favourite saga Anthony Daniels and Gary Kurtz were there, while William Shatner and Marina Sirtis came to please the Star Trek fans! Beside the other great guests like Tom Felton from the Harry Potter series, and the charming Hayden Panettiere and Eliza Dushku, there were actors, who enlighted my youth such as Lee Majors (from The Six Million Dollar Man and The Fall Guy), Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman (the infamous JR from Dallas and the Major from I Dream of Jeannie).
For their autographs, it was endless queues of queues especially for some actors like the one playing Drako Malfoy, one of the most popular of the event. His fans went crazy at his arrival. And what about Robert Englund, the actor of Freddy Krueger, a monster queue… able to give you nightmare! Some people were obliged to queue the next day because they were not able to see him on the first day.
Unfortunately, for some actors, it was forbidden to shoot any photograph, and it was well watched and organized properly in the queues. It was the case for the beautiful Hayden Panettiere, but after getting her autograph and after having kindly asked her agent allowed me to shoot couple of photographs, but from the queue, which was not an easy task considering the crowd. It was a similar situation with Anthony Daniels: he was away from the others, not easy to capture on any shoot, and it was not possible to get any photograph at his table. Though, during the breaks he took time to go through the queue to greet the visitors, and to allow them to take pictures with him. Other actors participated in Q&A sessions, to discover a litte bit more about them. It was especially interesting for the pair of I dream about Jeannie, where we felt a true complicity between both actors.
Among the associations, was present the 501st Canadian Garrison from Toronto of course, with six members of the Imperial Fortress, including couple of members from Ottawa. The R2 Builders Club was just nearby the troops of Vader, with several astromechs. A less known association was there too: Steampunk Canada with their steampunk accessories and also a better known: The Ontario Ghostbusters, they were very interesting to discover. At the booth of the ghost hunters, it was possible to see the famous slime and also some wonderful props. It made us excited for the new Ghostbusters III movie, which is officially planned for 2013.
Big names were present at the event: Hasbro, Lucasfilm, DK, Warner Bros. Though the first two were a little bit disappointing: Hasbro didn’t have a lot of Star Wars products, except for the commemorative packs for the release of the Blu-Ray discs, the Republic Attack Shuttle and of course, the B-Wing Fighter, which was an exclusive to the event. On the booth of Lucasfilm, no Blu-Ray discs that one may have expected. Only a green screen, where one could be taken in photograph to be the star of the promotional poster of the release of the Blu-Ray edition… But nice sets were done to be shoot in, with some heroes of the Star Wars universe. Among the sets, was a superb AT-ST built by the Canadian Legion. On the DK booth, there was plenty: all the books about our favourite saga, just nearby the ones dedicated to the hero with the fedora, and others from Transformers. The most impressive booth was certainly the one of the Warner Bros. It was totally dedicated to one of their latest releases: Green Lantern, with a prop of the alien Abin Sur, directly out of the movie. By the way, Temuera Morrison is the alien in the movie.
For the video games fans, there was the Gaming Expo, which was in fact a integral part of the event. Most of the area was covered by most of the platforms like XBox 360 and the Nintedo 3DS. LG Electronics was there too, and gamers were able to compete in one of the biggest contests of 3D games in Canada. Their set was superb, using the theme of Call of Duty. It was possible to find arcade games for the ones who wanted some entertainment, especially on the booth of Disney Interactive Studios, which was very popular among the youngests. I felt disappointed to not have seen in any place Star Wars The Old Republic, except on a banner.
As for the artist alley, it was spreading from one side of the exhibition hall up to the other end: giving room to talent in fact. Going from table to table, I got the opportunity to see comics books from Star Wars The Old Republic, with the covers of our friend Benjamin Carré. I also met Dave Ross, who made the storyboarding for the series. There were also other artists well known on MintInBox, such as Katie Cook with her ESB 30th Anniversary artworks and also Leo Leibelman with his superb Star Wars work. And there was the Quebecian artist François Chartier with his new banner and his latest artworks among them the very nice Batman « Dancing with the Devil by the Pale Moonlight. » I took the opportunity to get his first sketchbook with a small sketch he made for me during the event. Thanks again François!
Then I did a little jogging among the resellers because of lack of time. It was possible to find a lot of various things: tees, comics, cards, action figures and so on… Unfortunately nothing really new. A small story: while wandering around the tables full of comics, I saw a poster for the next Montréal Comic-Con, nearby which I met Alex, one of the organisers and also the owner of 1,000,000 Comix. So a small Hello to him, and see you in couple of days!
The fans in costumes were plenty, each of them adding colours to the event: several pirates, Princesses Leia, super-heroes, and some with a lot of efforts, some others with only a little make-up and others with huge costumes. I would like to give a special mention to a Steampunk Buzz Lightyear, very orginal, with working wings able to unfold to infinity and beyond!
At last, or alas, I should not forget to speak about the many panels and activities I was not able to attend to, among them the projection of the premiere of the fourth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (in fact I will wait for the premiere in French at the Montréal Comic-Con). It was a very busy event who this years has a impressive final tally of 77 840 attendees, where it was not possible to get bored: everyone could have found something interesting. It was my first experience there and I did really love it. I will certainly attend to another edition but I feel disappointed that Fan Expo2012 will be on the same dates as Star Wars Celebration VI.
