Depuis quelques années, il y a des Star Wars Nights lors d’événements sportifs en Amérique du Nord, que ce soit dans la NBA (Basketball), la MLB (Baseball) ou encore… dans la NHL (Hockey) !
Une de ces soirées spéciales était organisée pour une partie des Sénateurs d’Ottawa de la ligue nationale de hockey le 29 mars 2015. Et lorsque l’on est un fan de Star Wars et de hockey, c’est une occasion à ne pas manquer. Je me suis donc rendu au Canadian Tire Center, l’amphithéâtre des Sénateurs, où la rencontre avait lieu à 17h.
L’enjeu du match avait son importance en cette fin de saison régulière. Et les Sens pouvaient compter sur les troupes de l’Empire pour tenter de remporter la victoire contre les visiteurs, les Panthers de la Floride ! Postés dans le hall principal en avant-match, c’est plus d’une trentaine de costumés de la 501st Capital City Garrison qui était présente pour accueillir les fans. Et autant les plus petits que les grands se faisaient un plaisir de se faire prendre en photo avec les Stormtroopers, Sandtrooper, gardes impériaux, chasseurs de primes et enfin, le Seigneur Vador. Quelques enfants ont même pris la peine de venir costumés en cette grande soirée intergalactique. Pour ajouter à l’animation lors de la partie, la musique thème de Star Wars se faisait entendre à quelques occasions, en plus d’avoir de courts passages des films qui jouaient sur l’écran du tableau indicateur. On apercevait par exemple Jabba the Hutt rire lorsqu’un joueur de la Floride n’avait pas réussi son jeu !
For couple of years, there are Star Wars Nights during sport events in North America: either during NBA matches, MLB or even NHL !
Such an event was organized for a match of the Ottawa’s Senators on the 29th of March 2015. When you are a fan of both Star Wars and Hockey, it is something that you cannot miss ! So I drove to the Canadian Tire Center, the ice rink of the Senators, where the match started at 17:00.
Since it’s the end of the season, the result of the match was important. The Senators could have relied on the Empire troops to help them go for victory against the visitors – the Panthers from Florida. More than thirty of the Empire’s finest of the 501st Capital City Garrison took position in the main hall before the match to welcome the fans. As much the kids as the grown-ups were enjoying to have their pictures taken with Stormtroopers, Sandtroopers, Imperial Guards, bounty hunters and, last but not least, the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. Some kids even came with their own costumes for that intergalactic evening. To have a stellar atmosphere, we even heard sometimes the Star Wars theme, and even some shorts of the movies on the scoreboard, like for example the laugh of the terrible Jabba the Hutt when a Florida player missed his shot !
Les Sénateurs d’Ottawa se devaient de remporter ce match face aux Panthers de la Floride, qui avaient perdu en prolongation la veille contre les Canadiens de Montréal. Ce 2 points au classement était bien important pour espérer avoir une des deux places tant convoitées du Wild Card de l’Association de l’Est pour une participation aux séries éliminatoires. Au 9ème rang avant la partie, les Sens n’étaient qu’à un seul point derrière les Bruins de Boston avec un match en main. Mais le côté obscur de la Force n’a pas effrayé les Panthers… Malheureusement, les Sénateurs n’ont pas su capitaliser sur leurs chances de marquer lors des deux premières périodes, laissant les visiteurs prendre une avance de 2-0. Et à ma grande déception, ce n’était pas au gardien Hammond à qui l’entraîneur avait confié le filet pour Ottawa, c’était donc Anderson qui était en quête d’une 15ème victoire cette saison.
En début de 3ème période, les partisans d’Ottawa étaient bien heureux de voir leur équipe revenir dans la partie grâce à un but d’Erik Karlsson en avantage numérique. Mais, les Panthers n’avaient pas dit leur dernier mot, le jeu du match revient sans contredit à Jaromir Jagr, qui nous a montré qu’il avait encore de bonnes mains ! Jagr a débordé le défenseur des Sens, pour servir une belle feinte au gardien, Jagr a ensuite contourné le filet pour enfiler son 15ème but à 13:57, son 2ème du match, un jeu qui semblait enfantin !
Jean-Gabriel Pageau a redonné espoir aux siens en réduisant une fois de plus l’écart à un but en marquant à 17:39 sur une superbe passe de Mike Hoffman. Puis, une chance en or s’est offerte aux Sens pour créer l’égalité, une punition a été attribuée à un joueur des Panthers en fin de partie. Ottawa a retiré leur gardien à l’avantage d’autres hommes, c’était donc 6 contre 4, mais sans avoir réussi à prendre le contrôle en zone adversaire, les Sénateurs ont perdu la rondelle aux profits de leur rivaux, Dave Bolland a scellé l’issue de la rencontre avec son 5ème dans un filet désert !
C’est donc une défaite crève-cœur de 4 à 2 pour les Sénateurs, d’autant plus que Boston a remporté leur match contre la Caroline le soir même et que les Sénateurs se voient maintenant talonner par les Panthers juste derrière eux. Ce sera donc une chaude lutte avec ces quelques dernières parties à disputer au calendrier régulier. Je souhaite donc la meilleure des chances aux Sénateurs afin qu’ils se classifient pour les séries, GO SENS GO… et pourquoi pas un affrontement Sénateurs vs Canadiens !
Avant de quitter l’aréna, ceux et celles qui comme moi ont pris un pack Star Wars se voyaient remettre une rondelle exclusive Star Wars/Sénateurs, un beau souvenir de cette soirée. The Senators had to win against the Panthers, who lost the day before against the Montreal’s Canadiens. They needed 2 points in the championship to get a chance to have one of the two seats of the Eastern Association’s Wild Card, to be able to be part of Stanley Cup playoffs. The Senators were 9th before the match, that means only 1 point away from the Boston’s Bruins. But the dark side of the Force didn’t scare the Panthers… Unfortunately the Senators didn’t manage to set a shot during the first two periods of the match and so the visitors took the opportunity to have set the score to 2-0. I felt sorry that the coach didn’t put Hammond in the goal cage, but Anderson, who was seeking for a 15th victory this season.
At the beginning of the 3rd and last period, the supporters of Ottawa were delighted to see their team scoring with a shot by Erik Karlsson. The Senators were in powerplay. But the Panthers were not done just yet. Everything was on the shoulders of Jaromir Jagr, who demonstrated he was still very strong ! He managed to lure the Senator’s goaltender, went around the goal to set his 15th goal at 13:57, his second goal during the match, and it seems it was just a kidplay for him !
Jean-Gabriel Pageau managed to give back hope to his team by reducing the difference to 1 point at 17:39, after a good pass from Mike Hoffman. Then the Senators got a golden opportunity to make it even: a penalty against the Panthers was given at the end of the match. Ottawa decided to withdraw its goaltender and to replace him by another player, so it was a 6 versus 4, but without managing to take ground on the other side. The Senators then lost the puck, which fell in the hands of Dave Bolland, who scored the final point in a deserted goal !
So it was a defeat for the Senators, 4 to 2, moreover Boston won over Carolina on the same day, and the Senators are very close to the Panthers, who are just behind them. The last matches, on the regular schedule, will be very intense. I wish the best chance to the Senators, so they could qualify for the series. GO SENS GO ! We could even dream about a face-off between the Senators and the Canadiens in the first round !
