Le début mai à Ottawa, c’est le printemps… la fièvre des séries éliminatoires de la LNH avec les Sénateurs, c’est aussi le Festival canadien des tulipes… mais cette année, c’est surtout Star Wars Identités : L’Exposition !
Dû à une très forte demande, après une avant-première mondiale à Montréal il y a maintenant un an et un passage à Edmonton, la populaire exposition interactive de X3 Productions fait un retour dans l’Est canadien, cette fois dans la capitale nationale, Ottawa. C’est le Musée de l’aviation et de l’espace du Canada qui accueille les quelque 200 pièces d’archives de la collection de Lucasfilm Ltd. du 10 mai au 2 septembre 2013.
J’ai eu le privilège de pouvoir assister, pour une seconde fois, à l’avant-première médiatique de cette fabuleuse exposition le jeudi 9 mai. En arrivant sur les lieux aux alentours de 9h, je remarque un avion des Forces armées entre les deux bâtiments… j’imagine alors y voir un X-wing, ç’aurait été incroyable pour nous mettre dans l’esprit du thème !

Beginning of May in Ottawa, that’s Spring, the fever of the NHL playoffs with the Senators, but it’s also the Canadian Festival of tulips… But this year, it’s especially Star Wars Identities: the Exhibition!
Since it met a huge success, and after a strong request and a world preview in Montréal a year ago, and a stay in Edmonton, the famous interactive exhibition of X3 Productions is coming back in Eastern Canada, and this time in the capital city: Ottawa. The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is hosting the 200 archive pieces from the Lucasfim collection, from the 10th of May until the 2nd of September 2013.
I got the privilege to assist for the second time, to the media preview of this fabulous exhibit on Thursday the 9th of May. Arriving there by 9am, I noticed an airplane of the armed forces between two buildings… And then I imagined to see, in that place, an X-Wing, that would have been incredible to set the atmosphere, wouldn’t it?
Après m’être rendu au grand hangar où se déroule l’événement, je m’aperçois qu’il n’y a pas de conférence de presse comme à Montréal pour cette inauguration, pas de discours, celui-ci étant destiné à un Gala V.I.P. réservé aux partenaires le soir même. Nous étions alors tout bonnement invités à visiter l’exposition, et pour ce, des membres de l’équipe de X3 Productions accompagné d’une porte-parole du Lucas Cultural Arts Museum étaient disponibles pour des entrevues.
J’ai donc enfilé dispositif d’écoute et bracelet intelligent, et suis parti à la redécouverte de ce grand parcours au beau milieu de notre saga préférée.
Ce fut un immense plaisir de revoir toutes ces superbes pièces, du costume de C-3PO, à la maquette du Slave One, en passant par plusieurs artworks conceptuels, sans oublier mon présentoir favori, celui avec plusieurs vaisseaux de la flotte rebelle et impériale, jusqu’à la pièce de résistance, le grand Seigneur noir, Dark Vador.
En sillonnant les allées, je remarque qu’il y a plus d’espace pour y circuler. En effet, l’exposition bénéficie de 92 m2 de superficie de plus qu’à Montréal, ce qui facilitera le déplacement des visiteurs en périodes achalandées.
Tout au long du parcours, j’ai également trouvé agréable de me replonger dans les diverses capsules audios et vidéos, car ne l’oublions pas, l’exposition a ce volet scientifique sur l’identité humaine, qui est amenée d’une façon vraiment intéressante.
Puis il y a la fameuse quête, où nous sommes amenés à créer notre propre personnage Star Wars, ce que j’ai réalisé une fois de plus avec un pur plaisir.
After having gone in the big hangar, where the event took place, I noticed that there was no media conference like in Montréal for that opening, no special talk, since it was for the VIP session reserved for the partners of the event in that evening. We were welcomed to visit the exhibition and some members of X3 Productions together with a spokesperson of the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum were available for interview.
I then donned the headset and the “smart” strap, and then I went to rediscover a trip in our favourite saga.
It was a real pleasure to see one more time all these superb pieces, from the C-3PO costume to the Slave I model, and without forgetting many conceptual sketchworks and my favourite: the display of many Rebel and Imperial starships, and also the cherry on the cake: the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.
Among the aisles, I noticed that there is more room to move along. Indeed, the exhibit has around 92 m2 more than in Montréal, which will ease the visitors in case of affluence.
All along, I found the experience to be very pleasant: going back and forth in the audio and video pieces: not to be forgotten, the exhibition has this nice little scientific touch about human identity, and which is brought forward a very interesting way.
And there was that famous quest, which leads us to create our very own Star Wars character, and of course, I did that one more time for my own entertainment!
Avant notre sortie se trouve bien sûr la boutique officielle de l’expo, qui est beaucoup plus spacieuse qu’à Montréal. Plus grande signifie plus de marchandises, de quoi dépenser plusieurs billets !
Depuis ma dernière visite de l’exposition à Montréal, plusieurs articles souvenirs se sont ajoutés à la collection exclusive. Je remarque notamment trois nouveaux modèles de casquette, une tuque, des tours de cou, des autocollants, ainsi que des épinglettes, des gourdes d’eau et des étuis pour iPhone, sans oublier le magnifique catalogue souvenir qui avait fait son apparition à la toute fin de l’expo à Montréal. À mon grand désarroi, les cartes postales en version française dont je suis avidement à la recherche n’étaient pas disponibles.
Cette fois, il n’y a pas que la marchandise exclusive Star Wars Identités, mais une panoplie de produits dérivés de plusieurs marques. Il serait beaucoup trop long de tous vous les énumérer, ça se résume à plusieurs livres, des sets LEGO, des distributeurs M&M Star Wars, d’autres T-Shirts, du Uncle Milton, des kits Revell, des figurines Hasbro, des tasses, des peluches… bref, la seule chose dont nous n’y retrouvons pas, ce sont des bustes et des statues des grandes marques telles que Gentle Giant ou Sideshow Collectibles.
Ce qui à mes yeux n’était pas nécessaire, cet ajout de produits non exclusif enlève pour moi tout le cachet qu’avait cette boutique !
Of course, before going out a visit to the official giftshop of the exhibition was mandatory! This one was bigger than its Montréal’s counterpart. “Bigger” means more products, and of course, more cash to dispense.
Since my last visit to the exhibition in Montréal, more “souvenir” products were added to the exclusive collection. I especially noticed three new kinds of baseball caps, a knit cap, necklaces, stickers and also some pins, flasks and some iPhone cases and also the incredible “souvenir” catalogue, which appeared at the end of the Montréal exhibition. Unfortunately, the postcards in French language, that I am very fond of and looking for, were not available.
This time, it was not only about the exclusive Star Wars Identities products, but also many others from various companies. It would be too long to enumerate them all, but one could summarize to several books, LEGO sets, some Star Wars M&M’s dispensers, other tees, some Uncle Milton products, Revell kits, Hasbro figures, cups, stuffed animals and so on. The only things we didn’t find were the busts and statues from brands like Gentle Giant or Sideshow Collectibles.
To my opinion, it’s not necessary: having non-exclusive products is somehow denaturing the touch that the giftshop had!

Alors ma première question, après une avant-première mondiale à Montréal qui a connu un très grand succès, puis un passage à Edmonton, pourquoi revenir présenter l’exposition Star Wars Identités dans l’Est à Ottawa ?
Et bien, à cause du grand succès définitivement. On a été agréablement surpris de l’impact que nous avons eu à la fois à Montréal et à Edmonton et on s’est dit que ça valait la peine d’ajouter une troisième date sur la tournée canadienne. Et puis on voulait revenir dans l’Est parce qu’on… moi-même personnellement, j’ai vu du monde pleurer à Montréal parce qu’ils n’avaient pas eu leur billet à la fin, je me suis dit qu’il y aurait à la fois les amateurs de l’Ontario et du Québec qui l’ont manqué qui vont revenir. Et puis Ottawa, c’est une belle ville, c’est une ville où il y a beaucoup de monde l’été, donc s’était l’endroit parfait pour nous.
Effectivement, à Montréal, l’exposition était pratiquement à guichet fermé chacune des journées, est-ce que vous vous attendez au même succès ici à Ottawa ?
Oui, je pense que oui. Je pense que c’est une exposition qui est tellement attirante à la fois pour les ados, leurs parents, les fans, ceux qui veulent là découvrir, nous sommes assez confiants que ça va être un gros succès à Ottawa.
Quelle est la pièce de l’exposition dont vous êtes le plus fier de présenter de la collection des archives de Lucasfilm ?
Je vous dirais du point de vue muséal, moi je suis un grand fan de tous les dessins qui démontrent tous le processus créatif de l’équipe de Lucasfilm quand ils ont développé leurs personnages. Donc, voir l’évolution par exemple de Yoda sur papier qui nous amène jusqu’au personnage final, ça du point de vue muséal, je trouve que c’est extraordinaire. Le petit gars en moi aime bien le présentoir avec tous les modèles des vaisseaux spatiaux, ça, moi je trouve ça extraordaire.

My first question: after the world preview in Montréal, which met a huge success, then moved to Edmonton, why is Star Wars Identities coming back to the East in Ottawa?
Well, definitely because of the huge success. We were well surprised by the impact we got in both Montréal and Edmonton, and we thought it was worth to add a third date for the Canadian tour, and we wanted to come back to the East because we… Well, I, personally, I saw people crying in Montréal because they didn’t manage to get their tickets at the end. So I told myself there should be people from Ontario and Québec who missed it and who would come back. Moreover Ottawa is a nice town, with plenty of people in Summer, so the place will be perfect for us.
Indeed, in Montréal, the exhibition was nearly sold-out every day. Do you expect the same success in Ottawa?
Yes, I think so. It’s a very attractive exhibition for teenagers, their parents, the fans, all the ones, who would like to discover it. We are quite confident that it will be a big success in Ottawa.
Which piece of the exhibition does make you the proudest to present from the collection of Lucasfilm archives?
From the point of view of the museum, I am a big fan of every sketches demonstrating the creative process of Lucasfilm teams, when they were researching the characters. So to see the evolution of Yoda from the first sheet of paper up to the final character, I found that extraordinary from the museum point of view. The small boy in me likes a lot the display with all the models of spaceships. From my point of view, that’s extraordinary.

Et puis l’autre côté de la médaille, quelle est la pièce dont vous auriez beaucoup aimé présenté, mais dont ce n’était pas possible avec les circonstances des nombreux déplacements des pièces ?
La Death Star, l’Étoile de la Mort, c’est la pièce que l’on aurait voulu faire voyager, mais qui ne pourra jamais voyager, elle est trop fragile malheureusement. Puis je l’ai vu, donc je suis content de l’avoir vu.
Oui, elle doit vraiment être très très belle !
Oui.
Alors là, je vais tenter un vieux truc Jedi, je vais tenter de vous influencer par le pouvoir de la Force, si vous pouvez nous révéler en exclusivité sur Mintinbox quelle sera la prochaine destination de Star Wars Identités après Ottawa ?
(Rires) Elle sera européenne.

En plus de l’exposition Star Wars Identités, vous avez une autre belle aventure muséale, l’exposition Indiana Jones et l’aventure archéologique. Actuellement, l’exposition a pris fin aux États-Unis, pouvez-vous rassurer les fans, est-ce que la tournée va se poursuivre ?
Eh bien en voici une exclusivité ou une primeur, l’exposition va aller faire plusieurs nouvelles villes aux États-Unis. Donc, nous sommes très contents, on va bientôt annoncer la prochaine. On a décidé qu’il fallait que cette exposition-là soit vue des fans américains, qui étaient très fâchés que l’on ne soit pas chez eux, alors on a répondu à leur demande.
Parfait, alors est-ce que l’exposition Star Wars Identités va aller également du côté américain ?
Pas pour l’instant, mais on ne sait jamais !

“L’Étoile de la Mort”, the Death Star is the piece that we would like to have shown, but it won’t be able to travel: unfortunately it’s too fragile. And I saw it, so I am happy to have seen it! 😉

Beside the Star Wars Identitites exhibition, you have another nice adventure: the Indiana Jones and Archaeological Adventure exhibition. Currently, the exhibition is over in the USA, could you tell the fans if it will continue its tour or not?
Well, here is an exclusivity, the exhibition will go around new towns in the USA. So, we are very happy and we will announce the next town. We decided that this exhibition should be seen by the American fans because some were very upset that we weren’t by their place, so we favorably answered to their request.
That’s perfect then. Will the Star Wars Identitites exhibition go to the other side of the border?
Not yet, but you never know!
