Quel est ton parcours en tant qu’illustrateur et dessinateur ?
Je suis un illustrateur freelance depuis un longtemps maintenant. J’ai commencé par faire des petits boulots comme des tee-shirts, des pochettes d’albums, etc… ce n’est que quand j’ai commencé à faire des sketchcards que ma charge de travail a commencé à augmenter.
L’exposition médiatique suite aux sketchcards a été grande. Je prends aussi des sketchcards sur commission ainsi que des plus grandes peintures.
Tu as suivi une école particulière ?
Je dessine depuis que j’ai trois ans. Tout au long de l’école primaire, j’ai fait toutes les classes que je pouvais qui avait un lien avec l’art. C’est quelque chose que j’ai toujours apprécié.
Après le lycée, j’ai assisté à l’université d’art de Memphis et obtenue mon diplôme d’illustrateur (Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree).
What is your professional background as an artist?
I have been a freelance illustrator for a while now. I started out doing small jobs such as t-shirts, album covers etc. It was not until i started doing sketch cards that my work load began to increase.
The exposure from doing various card sets has been great. I also take on private commissions on cards as well as larger original paintings.
Did you follow any specific courses / schools / universties or are you an autodidact?
I have been drawing since i was about three years old. All through grade school, i took every class i could with regards to art. It’s something that I have always enjoyed.
After high school, I attended the Memphis college of art and earned a BFA degree in illustration.
Comment t’es tu retrouvé à dessiner du Star Wars ?
Comment es-tu rentré dans le monde de l’artfan Star Wars ?
Eh bien, je faisais déjà quelques commandes privées relatives à l’univers de Star Wars, mais il y a quelques années, j’ai pris mon portfolio et je suis allé montrer mon travail lors du San Diego Comic Con. J’ai pris beaucoup de contact et grâce a mon réseau, j’ai été mis en contact avec Topps.
Quelques semaines plus tard, j’ai envoyé ma première sketchcards à Topps et je suis devenue un artiste approuvé par Lucasfilm, puis j’ai travaillé sur le set de carte Star Wars : The Clone Wars saison 1. Plus tard, j’ai continué à faire des carte pour « Star Wars Galaxy 5, 6 et 7 », «The 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back », et « The Clone Wars season 2 ».
En 2010, j’ai eu la chance d’être invite à créer un artwork limité et exclusive pour Star Wars Celebration V.
Du coté des projets Star Wars, j’ai aussi réalisé un flyers pour Star Wars Grand Florida Alliance, et bien d’autres. Récemment j’ai été invité une nouvelle fois à créer un artwork pour Star Wars Celebration VI. De plus pour Celebration VI, je vais devoir présenter un casque pour le projet « As You Wish ». Pour ce projet on nous a envoyé un casque à personnaliser. Le mien mélangera à la fois Star Wars et Alien. Les casques seront exposés à CVI, et seront mis plus tard aux enchères. Tous les profit iront à la fondation « Make a Wish ».
How have you been involved in illustrating Star Wars?
How did you get involved into the Star Wars’ art/fan universe?
Well I was already doing private commissions relating to Star Wars but a few years back, i put together my portfolio and headed out to San Diego Comicon to show off my work. I did a lot of networking and was put in touch with Topps
A couple of weeks later, I landed my first ever sketch card set with Topps becoming an LFL approved artist and working on Star Wars : The Clone Wars season 1 sketch card set. I later went on to do more Star Wars sets including Star Wars Galaxy 5, 6, and 7, The 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, and The Clone Wars season 2.
In 2010 I was fortunate to be invited to create a limited edition print for Star Wars Celebration V.
Other Star Wars related projects include art for a promo flyer for the Star Wars Grand Florida Alliance and more.
Recently i have been invited once again to create a print for Star Wars Celebration VI. Also for Celebration VI, I will have a helmet on display in the As You Wish helmet project. With this project we are sent a helmet to customize. My helmet will incorporate both Star Wars and Alien. The helmets will be displayed at C VI, and later auctioned off. All proceeds go to the Make a Wish foundation.
Quel est ton film Star Wars préféré ?
C’est une question difficile car j’aime tous les films. C’est comme choisir un enfant préféré. Mais je suppose que si je devais choisir, ce serait le Retour du Jedi.
J’aime les personnages du film, en particulier Tout ce qui touche au palais de Jabba. Je me souviens quand j’étais enfant, j’ai ramassé un magazine dans une boutique, je l’ai fait tomber et là je vis Jabba pour la première fois. J’étais en admiration devant sa… Oserais-je dire beauté… ou l’absence de beauté. Je voulais en savoir plus à propos du personnage de cette limace géante.
Quel est ton personnage Star Wars préféré dans la saga ?
Ceux qui me connaissent pourront répondre facilement à cette question. J’ai une obsession pour le personnage d’Oola – la danseuse esclave de Jabba. Je ne sais même pas pourquoi. J’ai une attirance pour les Twileck, je suppose.
Une partie de moi veut secrètement croire qu’elle a survécu au Rancor et à eu une vie heureuse quelques part dans la Galaxie. On peut rêver non ?
What is your favorite Star Wars movie?
This is a tough question as I love all of the films. It’s like picking a favorite child. But i guess if i HAD to pick, it would be Return of the Jedi.
I love the characters, especially anything related to Jabba’s palace. I remember as a kid, I picked up a magazine at the store and flipped through it and saw Jabba for the first time. I was in awe of his … dare i say beauty… or lack of. I wanted to know more about this giant slug of a character.
What is your favorite Star Wars character?
Anyone who knows me, can easily answer that question. I have an obsession with the character Oola – Jabba’s slave dancer. Im not even sure why. I have a thing for twi’leks i guess.
A part of me secretly wants to believe she survived the Rancor and is living a happy life somewhere in the galaxy. One can dream right ?
Quel est le personnages que tu aimes le plus dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi.
J’aime dessiner presque tous les personnages. Mais pour plusieurs raison, j’ai toujours aimé dessiner Jabba. Il est plutôt fun. Beaucoup de couleurs, textures, etc… En plus il est assez cool dans mon book.
What is the character you prefer to draw? Please explain us why.
I love drawing almost all of the characters. But for some reason i have always enjoyed drawing Jabba. He’s a lot of fun. Lots of colors, textures etc. Plus he’s just pretty cool in my book.
Quel est le personnages que tu aimes le moins dessiner ? Brièvement pourquoi.
Si je devais choisir un personnage difficile à dessiner, je serais allé du coté de R2-D2 ou peut être Dark vador. Ils ont beaucoup de détails et sont très… comment dirais-je complexe. Si vous ne faites tout simplement pas bien les choses… cela ne marche pas. Je préfère de loin les créatures organiques plus exotiques. Je les trouve toujours plus amusantes. Mais en réalité, chaque personnage est un plaisir. Juste que certains sont plus un défis.
What is the character you do not like to draw the most? Please explain us why.
If i had to pick a tough character to draw, i would have to go with maybe R2-D2 or maybe Darth Vader. They have a lot of detail and are very ..whats the word… complex. If you don’t get it right… it just doesnt work.
I much prefer the more organic alien creatures. I always find those fun. But really, every character is fun. Just some are a bit more of a challenge.
Quelle(s) technique(s) utilises tu et comment procèdes tu pour arriver à ton illustration finale ? (dessins au crayon, aquarelle, gouache, acrylique, directement sur ordi, etc.)
Je travail principalement avec des marqueurs, crayons de couleur, encre et acrylique. J’ai l’habitude de combiner la plupart de ces techniques dans les pièces que je crée.
J’ai tâté l’art numérique et je souhaite jouer un peu plus avec à l’avenir.
Which techniques do you use to reach the final work? (pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic painting, computer, etc.)
I work primarily in marker, colored pencil, ink, and acrylic. I usually combine most of those in every piece that I create. I have dabbled with digital art and would like to play around with that more in the future.
Quelle est l’illustration que tu as préféré réaliser ou que tu trouves la mieux aboutie ? Pourquoi ?
C’est une question difficile. Je suis mon pire critique quand il s’agit de mon art. Je prends part à tout. Il y a quelques pièces que je pense voir se démarquer. J’ai été très content de mon artwork pour Célébration V (Yoda), ainsi que de certaines commissions privées telles que la peinture de Oola et le Rancor, ou la basecard Jabba que j’ai créé pour la série Topps – Star Wars Galaxy 6.
J’ai commencé à pas mal travaillé au format 12×24 et j’ai bien aimé mon Scout biker et aussi le Rancor. C’est encore une fois comme choisir son enfant favori. J’aime des pièces différentes, pour des raisons différentes.
What is the illustration that you like to have worked on the most or the best looking one according to you? Why?
This is a tough question. I am my own worst critic when it comes to my art. I pick apart everything. There are a few pieces though that I think stand out. I was happy with my Celebration V art (Yoda), as well as some private commissions such as the Oola and Rancor painting, or the Jabba and Oola basecard that I created for the Topps set – Star Wars Galaxy 6. I started working a lot with the 12×24 size and liked my Biker Scout on speeder bike and the Rancor piece. This is also a lot like picking a favorite child. I like different pieces for different reasons.
En plus de Star Wars sur quel univers travailles-tu ? Et lequel est ton favori ?
J’ai travaillé sur un certains nombres d’autre licences, la pluspart du temps des sketchcards. En plus de Star Wars, je viens de terminer un set appelé « Nevermore Alice » qui est un nouveau regarde sur le classique « Alice au pays des merveilles » qui doit sortir en Avril 2012. Dans un futur proche, je vais travailler sur d’autre licence comme « Bettie Page collection », « Contemporary Pinups », « Mars Attacks », et encore plus ! Je ne suis pas encore autoriser à parler de certains projets, mais restez à l’écoute, vous en serrez beaucoup plus sur moi très bientôt !
What are the other universes you usually work on? What is your favorite one, if any?
I’ve done a number of other properties, mostly sketch card sets. In addition to Star Wars, I recently completed a set called Nevermore Alice which is a new take on the classic Alice in Wonderland which is due out in April 2012. I will be working on a number of other properties in the near future such as the Bettie Page collection, Contemporary Pinups, Mars Attacks, and many more ! Some projects Im not yet allowed to mention but stay tuned, you will see a lot more from me very soon !
De quel autre illustrateur aimes-tu particulièrement le travail ? Une illustration précise de lui peut-être ?
Wow ma liste des illustrateurs que j’admire est enorme. Je suis un grand fan de Jerry Vanderstelt, Mark McHaley, et de beaucoup d’autres. Il est presque impossible de les énumérer tous. J’adore l’art et tous les artistes que j’admire apportent quelques choses de nouveau autour de la table. Si d’autres artistes lisent ceux-ci, vous êtes probablement aussi dans mes favoris.
Do you have any preferred artist amongst others? Maybe a specific illustration of him?
Wow the list of illustrators that i admire and look up to is HUGE. Im a big fan of Jerry Vanderstelt, Mark McHaley, and sooo many others. It’s next to impossible to list them all. I just love art and all of the artists I admire bring something new to the table. If any other artists are reading this, you too are probably among my favorites.
Un séjour en Europe ou sur une convention prochainement ? Si oui où ? Si non serais tu intéressé ?
Je n’ai encore pas fait de show en dehors des Etats-unis. J’aimerais bien. J’ai toujours dit que s’ils faisaient une autre Star Wars Celebration à l’étranger et si je devais être invité, je serais certainement présent. J’adore voyager mais ne trouvent pas toujours le temps de le faire. Je garde un emploie du temps très occupé. Mais oui, c’est certainement quelque chose que veux faire dan un avenir proche.
Comme MIB est aussi un site de collectionneurs, es tu collectionneur ? Une pièce rare ou favorite ?
Je le suis effectivement. J’avais l’habitude de collectionner un grand nombre de mini-bustes Gentle Giant, mais j’ai changé mes attentions depuis.
J’ai en projet actuellement de créé un diorama autour de Jabba avec les statues Attakus. Jusqu’à présent je pense avoir Leia Slave, Oola, Gamorrean Garde, C-3PO, Bib Fortuna, et un Jawa. Je pense que c’est tout ce que j’ai. Je recherche toujours à ajouter Jabba, Salacious et le narguilé et han Solo dans la carbonite. Parmi les statues je dois dire que mon préféré est le garde Gamorrean, bien qu’Oola soit mon personnage préféré, mais il y a quelque chose dans ce garde que je trouve étonnant.
J’ai aussi commencé une collection de Oola, statues, figurines, mini-bustes etc…je suis toujours à la recherche de jolie Oola à ajouter a cette collection.
Do you plan to travel in Europe for a convention or any artists show? If yes, where? If no, would you be interrested in joining such events?
I have yet to do a show outside of the U.S. I would love to though. I have always said that if they do another Star Wars Celebration overseas and if I were to be invited, i would definitely go. I love to travel, but don’t always find the time to do it that often. I keep a pretty busy schedule. But yeah, it’s definitely something i want to do in the near future.
As Mintinbox.net is a website dedicated to Star Wars collectors/collectibles, are you a Star Wars collector? Do you have a preferred piece?
I do actually. I used to collect a lot of the Gentle Giant mini busts but have since changed my focus. Im in the process of creating a large Jabba display with the Attakus statues. So far i think i have Slave Leia, Oola, Gamorrean Guard, C-3PO, Bib Fortuna, and a Jawa. I think thats all i have. Im still looking to add Jabba, Salacious with hookah pipe and Han in Carbonite. Of those statues, I would have to say my favorite is the Gamorrean guard. Although Oola is my favorite character, there is just something about the detailing with the guard that i find amazing.
I have also started an Oola collection- statues, figures, mini busts you name it. Always looking for a nice Oola piece to add to that collection.
Dans cette pièce spéciale de Yoda, que tu as réalisé pour Celebration V. Lorsque nous le regardons nous ressentons l’intensité de la force de Yoda au cour de cette scène dans l’Empire Contre Attaque. Comment l’as tu réaliser, et que recherchais tu à travers cette adaptation ?
C’est exactement ce que j’ai essayé de capturer avec ce dessin « Feeling the Force ».
je pensais que ce n’était pas seulement une scène emblématique mais plus de la puissance et de l’émotion aussi. Yoda prouve que la taille importe peu. J’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à réaliser cette pièce. En fait c’est l’un des deux seuls dessins que j’ai réalisé qui trône sur le mur de mon studio.
In this special pieces of yoda, you did for Celebration V. When we see it we feel the force of yoda during this scene in ESB. How do you realize it, and what are you looking for with this adaptation?
Thats exactly what i was trying to capture with this piece. «Feeling the force.
I thought it was not only an iconic scene but powerful with emotion as well. Yoda proves that size matters not. I had a lot of fun with this piece. In fact its one of only two pieces of original art that I have done that hangs on my wall in my studio.
